and so it begins...

the festival season is upon us!
i set out earlier this week to pick up a bunch of fringe festival tickets for my parents' mid-august visit. the royal mile is typically full of tourists, but now not only does it have loads of tourists, it is full of street performers advertising their performances in the fringe festival. i was in line for about an hour at the fringe office on the royal mile and managed to see a balloon woman, a human butterfly, a man wearing only leather and chains, someone covered in blood, a man professing to jump higher than the tallest man, and some scrawny kids doing a comedy bit. after getting my tickets there, i headed to the next venue to collect - called the pleasance courtyard. i walked through a huge stone threshold to find a biergarten and picnic tables full of drunkards in the mid afternoon. nobody told me that fiesta came to edinburgh? yessss! needless to say, the festival season has arrived and there are loads of things going on. dustin is going to be speechless when he arrives tomorrow. :) i almost forgot to mention the purple inflatable upside-down cow venue that i came across...quite curious. rex and i have been busily learning local dog walks and doggie poo etiquette. aren't YOU jealous. it's funny when you have a four-legged friend - strangers and neighbors alike come out of the woodwork to talk and pet the dog. i met the groomer from NYC across the street, named cat, and the man that smokes a lot, named tim, from chicago who lives on our block - he is the cumberland street watchman who told me all about the good local bars. neighbors seem to offer the best local dirt. in between outings, rex has been destroying his toys and taking lots of naps in the SUN. yes, it has actually been 'warm' (70s) this week. tonight, it sounds like the edinburgh castle is under attack. perhaps a fireworks show at the castle? i sure hope so....i lack sufficient urban combat moves. go here for pics of random pre-festival encounters from the week. with my study abroad submission complete(!), i am sure we'll be soaking up plenty more this weekend. :)
