HOW is it already july?! it seems like june was a blur and we spent most of it recovering from may's structures exam (don't get me started), a memorable excursion to skye with milena, and our whirlwind family trip.
JUNE brought warm weather - yes you read that correctly - perfect for sitting outdoors and catching up with friends at the cumberland bar's beer garden. (perhaps the mets' warm weather predictions for this summer are correct? though we've learned not to hold our breath!) dustin went to houston for work early in the month so we spent the weekend before his departure laying out at inverleith park in the sunshine watching all the fat cats at the taste festival, as i was still recovering from the alleged swine flu.
WHILE dustin was away, i went with my friend emily to her parents' place north of dundee for the weekend and experienced the 'gagie house' in all it's glory! her parents have been working on the enormous house nearly all of emily's life and the gardens surrounding the property are incredible. the dogs had a field day and we ate ourselves senseless. emily, simon, thommy, rex and i even managed to do a little marathon training run through the surrounding countryside and villages, just before a massive sunday brunch!
WHILE i was at gagie with 'team amsterdam', dustin called from houston to say that he had been asked to stay in texas for an extra week, and it looked like he'd miss our anniversary....a few hours later, he called back and told me i'd be on the next flight out of edinburgh, texas bound, to see him! i don't know how he pulled it off, but it was wonderful to be back in houston together for our anniversary - where only one year before, we were celebrating and also saying farewell to everyone. houston was a very unexpected and rejuvenating trip: we played with friends, went swimming, baked in the houston heat and humidity, drove with the windows down, ate chuys and lupe tortilla (twice), saw friends over pancakes, and even had visitors come from austin.
UPON returning to texas, it was time to celebrate emily's birthday and say farewell to anna, who stayed in our flat with rex while we were away. never a dull moment, i tell you! july has been great so far. we went to the american women's club july 4th picnic where we spent nearly eight hours hanging out, getting sunburned (!), and devouring burgers with fellow americans and familiar accents. we even met two aggies living in glasgow! it was great to meet so many other americans living in edinburgh, many of whom have scottish spouses, and hear their stories about assimilating and exploring the new territory.
WHAT'S next? travis and zaneta come sunday to edinburgh for a week long adventure! we can hardly wait to see them. the kessing family reunion is also next week, and we'll be hoping to skype lakeview resort and see everyone! then august is festival time: the city's population doubles in size and venues all over the city come alive with dance, theater, and comedy. i head back to texas in late september to take two more exams, so in the midst of it all i am studying. dustin has been working quite a bit and his current endeavor is having cable installed. after nearly a year in the dark ages, we are finally taking the plunge. :)
WE hope you are having a wonderful summer so far and hope to hear from you soon. lots of love, m+d
