last weekend we escaped edinburgh and headed north to aberfeldy, a tiny village in highland perthshire which has the river tay running through it. we are rubbish at taking restful holidays so our plan was to go someplace where there was literally nothing to do, and just enjoy it. the scenery was incredible - definitely one of the most fertile areas in scotland we've seen. the birks of aberfeldy are very beautiful waterfalls running through town, so we wandered along them and met 'ole robert burns along the way. er...a bronze version of him, anyway. we discovered a fantastic watermill-turned-art gallery/cafe called, of all things, the watermill. it was cozy and had really yummy food and, of course, tea and cakes!
the guest house we stayed in was gorgeous and the owners had booked us in for a very memorable anniversary dinner at one of the locals' favorite restaurants called the ailean chraggan where we ate very tasty fresh fish and drank excellent wine. for our anniversary we splurged the week before and bought a glenfiddich 15 year, so we had a dram and enjoyed watching the sunset. it was so quiet in aberfeldy and the bird song was beautiful. there were also a lot of fly fisherman along this stretch of the river tay. in the morning, i believe it is safe to say, we had the best full scottish breakfast we'd ever come across. the owners of the guest house also own a well-known butcher shop in nearby pitlochry, so all the haggis, sausage, etc. was fresh from their farms and processed in their butcher shop. yum-o! the owner, annette, and her husband had six teenage kids and i suppose once she got to cooking for all of them, she figured, what's a few more mouths to feed?! so they opened up fernbank guest house a few years ago. on a side note, her husband is an avid marathon runner and loved hearing about our adventure in amsterdam last fall. he was amazing to talk to and they even brought dustin and i next door to their house to show us all their medals from crazy marathons like the north pole and boston! we spent sunday wandering through the shops in town and fell in love with a tiny antique shop where we bought a few treasures. all in all, it was a wonderful and lazy weekend.
last night, on our actual anniversary, we stayed in and made fajitas like we had on our wedding night (perhaps just a convenient excuse to make mexican food?) and watched some of the home videos taken at our wedding. somehow we had never seen them before and it was so incredibly special. dustin and i were reminded of how blessed we are to have such amazing family and friends in our lives and recalled what a magical evening that was at the wildflower center, june 8, 2007. <3

Happy Anniversary. I remember how beautiful your wedding was. And what a great time we all had dancing and drinking the night away! I can't believe it has been 3 years already.
