well, it is sunday night and still light here...yes, it's nearly 9:45pm. we survived our first complete weekend here in edinburgh and even enjoyed a delightful meal with our first visitors, the atkins, tonight! yesterday we set out to buy phones, did some shopping on the royal mile, had a pint and watched people eat haggis while enjoying the spain vs. sweden game (also dodging intermittent showers) and met one of dustin's coworkers at a pub close to our house to wrap up the evening. we walked home at 10:30pm to see the sun setting. it's amazing how cool it has been getting here when the sun disappears. the locals pretend they are used to it - wearing t-shirts and all - but we know they are secretly freezing like us.
today we booked our return flights for july, talked to our dads on skype - wishing them a happy father's day - and tackled the washer+dryer combo machine thingy...with its cryptic, hieroglyphic-like directions with picture buttons and few words. we met dustin's family friends, mr. and mrs. atkins for dinner tonight after meeting up with them at their hotel on george street. the bar napoli was the real (italian) deal and after having nearly lived in italy, i think mr. and mrs. atkins would agree! it was wonderful to catch up with them and reflect on how different things are in different countries...but how you just soak it up and learn to go with the flow. we are getting pretty good at that. :) when we went to buy laundry detergent today (which never clearly states that it is detergent at all, by the way) we heard bagpipes up our street, in the park. we wandered over to see if there was some sort of parade but it was a 'troop' (?) of bagpipe players in their kilts performing for spectators in folding chairs while kids were running around in the grass. the music was amazing and it was surreal to just stumble across the performance in a legitimate and non-touristy place. it completely gave me the chills. i took a short video so hopefully you can tell what is going on. also, on our adventure to the market we witnessed a seagull altercation...which i also got on film. :) ...and we thought campus squirrels were dangerous. so that is about it - we are watching turkey dramatically upset the czech republic and getting ready for dustin's first day at work tomorrow. we miss you guys already and are currently devising a plan to smuggle loads of rotel and tortillas into this country in july after our texas visit. keep in touch...we are both on skype: meganlynnmccoy & mccoydm
go here for weekend pics and videos.
